Osina Community Hospital – History & Status

Osina is a town in Ideato North Local Government of Imo State of Nigeria. It is largely an agrarian community strategically placed amidst major federal roads traversing Owerri, Umuahia and Anambra State. It also boasts a fair percentage of enterprising youthful population. These attributes led the youths to form an umbrella organization called the Osina Youth Convention (now known as Osina Youth Club) : an umbrella Youth organization which was registered as an NGO. In 1981, the organization embarked upon building a hospital to cater to the needs of the sick in the community. A courageous endeavor indeed; the hospital on completion, started operation in 1987. Through the help of the then Catholic Parish Priest of St Mary’s Catholic Chrch, who is also the rector of Bonus Pastor Seminary school in Osina, who schooled in Germany, OYC entered into a working alliance with a German NGO called GTZ (Gesselsbafta for TechnisheZussamen), which means Organization for Technical Cooperation for six years. The NGO came into Osina with their equipment and manpower, headed by Dr and Dr (Mrs.) Gessler. It was finally commissioned in 1991 by the then Governor of Imo State, Commodore Anthony Ogugua. All these took place to meet the legal requirements of operating a hospital in Nigeria. It was explicitly registered under the name of Osina Community Hospital Welfare Foundation. This is to say that the Hospital is fully registered under the laws of Nigeria.

THE BOOM

The hospital which was initially conceived to provide medical succor to the town became a period of ferment not only for the town but to the far corners of the five South Eastern States…neighboring states. Osina Community was witnessing their own local version of “medical tourism”. Empowerment of the citizens blossomed. Small scale eateries, hospitality business flourished, small pharmacies and dispensaries sprang up and our local Afor market was not left out, so also our local churches. It was boom all the way. The hospital was attracting and treating all who came. Even some of our young girls were trained as nurse assistants.

THE BURST

The Germans left after six years of resoundingly successful sojourn. Dr Gesler handed the hospital over to our indigenous doctors and the hospital management board headed by Hon. Chief Rapheal Nwabueze handed over to Engr Philip Umunakwe led management board. The Surgeon who came with the German NGO stayed back and was under the payroll of the hospital, until 2002. He went back to Germany due to economic situation in Nigeria and other challenges. There was a steady decrease in patient load and most of the equipment was obsolete. The country entered a recession soon after in 2014. The small thriving businesses collapsed rapidly. The hospital went into serious collapse. Engr. Philip Umunakwe led board was succeed by four other management boards. In 2016, the Osina Youth Club appointed a management board led by Dr Uchenna Anthony Umeh to help revive the hospital and bring back its former glory. The hospital board is now leaning on its brothers and sisters living in the Diaspora to help in upgrading the hospital.

Osina Community in the Diaspora

This group came together to first offer medical outreaches. Wisdom came their way when they decided that it will be better to revamp the ailing hospital. The pandemic made this decision more urgent as our people die daily due to what simple medical science can cure. The town is grateful to them especially with the current crop of youths who are very progressive and dynamic.

OUR PRAYER

Osina Community USA, Inc., is seeking collaboration with medical professionals (Doctors & Nurses), medical institutions, drug manufacturers, medical equipment manufacturers, donors, and social funding organizations that can assist us in providing the much-needed equipment drugs, and volunteers to service the growing medical needs of Osina and surrounding communities. It is our focus to do our part in alleviating the medical crises that have affected all areas of Nigeria. No assistance is too small, and we are inviting all organizations and individuals to visit the hospital to see for themselves the deplorable situation that exists.
